I created this manifesto last year for PPP but looking back its clear I was trying to be over professional and fit into what I thought made a good designer rather than actually being true to myself. This is something that definitely needed changing in going forwards and creating a final manifesto.
I started by looking at the manifestos of some of the studios that I find appealing and would like to work for myself.
The Snask Manifesto
01/ If you don’t like your job – quit.
02/ If you love someone – let it show.
03/ Generosity always pays itself back.
04/ Always achieve greatness yourself before pointing out the faults and mistakes of others.
05/ Bureaucracy is spelled Bureaucrazy.
06/ Talk with clients like you talk to your family, friends and pets.
07/ Social skills are as important as being good at setting type or knowing how to spell.
08/ See people as people, not as target groups.
09/ Just because you wear a black suit, doesn’t mean you’re a goddamn professional.
10/ Having enemies is a good thing. It proves that you stood up for something sometime in your life.
Snasks manifesto makes it 100% obvious they are really laid back and fun loving people who care about other people and the ethics of the work that they produce. This is something I also want to put across in my own.
We make you feel so young!
We make you feel like spring has sprung, like there are songs to be sung and bells to be rung. That’s right. We’re a forward thinking design agency with a youthful approach. In other words, we offer something totally unique and something that a traditional agency can’t. We’re geared towards a millennial audience and we’re experts in Branding and Art Direction. Whether you're a new start-up looking for an awesome, unique, stand-out brand, or a well established business looking to move with the times and re-connect with your audience.
This is part of Alphabets manifesto - once again they are really playful in tone of voice and its a really clear message to both potential employees and clients how they operate.
MUSIC IS A CREATIVE COLLECTIVE THAT OPENED ITS DOORS IN 2007.
Born out of a frustration with the status quo and an inherent desire to create better communication for brands.
We know about creativity and that it comes in many guises. We’re passionate about people, culture, laughter and honesty (not always in that order).
We won’t follow due process or take the road well trodden. We won’t hide behind the ‘agency’ ‘client’ divide and we won’t create work we’re not proud of.
What we will do is ensure creativity is up-front and central to your brand, that we’ll always have a point-of-view and work tirelessly to create better communication for you.
What I love about Musics manifesto is that they say it was born out of frustration with normality. This ethos is what my design work is all about. I get bored just looking at the same very plain design styles and how people are too scared to be brave and I want to make it clear I am willing to break free of those rules.
1 - Do the best work you can, for the best people you meet.
2 - Less suit and tie - more tie dye
3 - Talk to your clients, your friends, the old lady who lives next door and even your favourite cactus.
4 - Don't let anyone undervalue what you do
5 - Be colourful in all that you do - when life makes you blue, mix it with red to make purple.
6 - Be brave - nobody ever gets remembered for following the crowd
I have also decided that creating a simple illustration for each point in the manifesto will really help it engage with my online audience and express myself visually.
My initial idea for the design of each animation was to create little characters to illustrate each manifesto point. I feel however this is really appealing it distracts from the context far too much and I want my audience to really take notice of what i'm saying and that to be the most important thing. So I decided instead to create much simpler animations just using really simple objects/symbols that represent each 'rule'.
This is my amended design for the first 'commandment' within my personal manifesto. I kept the animation really simple and straight to the point. Creating a simple swinging medal saying 'best' referring to my work being the best it can be and me only wanting to work for nice and good people/companies. I have morals as a designer and I will always remember that nomatter what amount of money is offered 'nice' and 'best' always comes first.
This 'rule' is simple, after interning in a business environment as oppose to a creative studio; I am sure that its not for me. Id much rather be in a place that is more laid back and this rule demonstrates this. Less suit and tie and more tie dye. The animation is simple and shows a morphing tie dye t-shirt.
This next point is about how I feel I am an approachable person who isn't afraid to talk to anyone; also that its important to know people no-matter who that is. Its just as important to speak with people who have no attachment to the creative industries as it is to talk with potential studios/employers. I chose to include the cactus animation as I am very close/conscious of nature and this is also a huge part of my personal morals and manifesto as a designer.
My next point is simply that you cannot let people under value you and your work. As a student many creatives get manipulated into working/interning for free just because big corporate companies say they can provide 'promotion' and spread your name. It's becoming a huge issue for creatives and I personally find it really insulting, it was important that this was included in my manifesto; I think anyone who truly respects you and your work will be willing to pay you what your worth.
This point is one this is genuinely really personal to me and has a lot of meaning. Over the past few years my mental health has really got in the way of my creativity. But I am learning how to use my creativity as a way of being happy and positive - so this little saying is a light hearted take on that.
The last one is massively influenced with our meetings/presentation with the guys from DBA. The main point I really took from meeting with them is not to back down and conform to what other people day design should look like - just be brave and you'll be remembered for exactly that.
I feel that each point in my new manifesto is really well considered & written and now represents me as a person and designer perfectly. I also feel I have animated each point to a high standard. They now take a proud place on their own page of my website.
